Governor Snyder delivered his budget proposals to the state legislature today. Here are a few highlights relevant to disadvantaged kids in Michigan:
- $130 million in new funding over the next two years for the state's preschool program. That works out to a 59 percent increase in funding, and it will allow thousands more disadvantaged 4 year olds to get preschool. But it falls short of funding preschool for all eligible 4 year olds.
- A 2 percent increase in K-12 funding. Schools that now get the least in per-pupil funding will get the biggest increase.
- $5 million for new programs to provide mental health services for kids.
- $2.5 million more for Michigan's Infant Mortality Reduction Plan.
