The State of Opportunity team began its work in 2012. Since then, they've produced hundreds of stories exploring the barriers to success that low-income kids and families in Michigan face.
Now, that important project is wrapping up.
Dustin Dwyer and Jennifer Guerra are two of the reporters who worked on State of Opportunity. Dwyer is a reporter that covers Grand Rapids and the west side of the state, while Guerra has focused mostly on the east side.
They sat down with Stateside's Cynthia Canty to look back on the past five years and to discuss three key issues they've covered during the project: infant mortality, early childhood education, and the challenges for young people aging out of foster care.
Listen to the full interview above to hear Dwyer and Guerra talk about the initial vision for State of Opportunity, how things have changed (for better or worse) over the last five years, and what their favorite stories were.
