The city of Flint has seen better days. Not only did the county just declare a public health emergencydue to toxic drinking water in some homes, Flint was named the third most dangerous city in the U.S. earlier this week.
If you haven’t been paying attention to what’s happening in Flint, you should be. Here are some things to keep in mind when you do:
- Over half of the city’s population is black
- Nearly halfof the population is living below the federal poverty level
- One in four people living in Flint is under the age of 18
- Only 11% of Flint residents over the age of 25 have a Bachelor’s degree or higher compared to 25.9% of Michigan residents
- The median household income in Flint? $24,834. That’s compared to a median income of $48,411for the entire state of Michigan
